22 Feb Craft Beer in Barcelona
What exactly is craft beer and where does it come from? Craft beers are brewed in craft breweries…duh! These breweries differ from major ones in the sense that they produce a lot less volume of beer and are independently owned. These breweries are generally characterised by their emphasis on quality, flavour and brewing technique.
This microbrewery movement began in the UK in the 1970s. Although other traditional artisan breweries did indeed exist in Europe before that. As this movement grew some breweries expanded their production and distribution, and the more encompassing concept of craft brewing emerged.
Craft beer can be described as 10 minutes of pure pleasure and happiness in a glass. Craft beer is to be savoured rather than downed. It is enjoyed for everyday celebrations and is viewed by many as one of the special things in life that makes your day taste and feel better.
So what craft beers can we offer you at Flaherty’s Irish Bar Barcelona?
Some of you may have already heard of Barcino Brewers, founded in 2011. This micro-brewery was set up by three friends, who in the beginning were brewing 5 gallons for themselves and their close friends on their terrace! Now they sell their different craft beers to bars and restaurants all over Barcelona and further afield. Barcino Bogatell Blat is a light and refreshing wheat beer with fruity tones. 4.9% in ABV. Its colour; beautifully clear and gold, its aroma; light spices, banana and cloves. Barcino Raval IPA, is a modern style IPA, produced with citrus hop to create it unique aromas and characteristics. 4.5% ABV, deep golden in colour with a lovely lychee, grapefruit and pineapple aromas.
Beercelona is brewed by the Barcelona Beer Company. Another instance of a group of friends sitting around having a beer and spontaneously deciding to open their own microbrewery “worthy of Barcelona” as they put it! Beercelona is an American Pale Ale created with water locally sourced in the Pyrenees and Magnum and Cascade hops. 5% ABV with a citrusy, floral slightly sweet aroma.
We’re pretty sure you’ve all heard about Brewdog. Flown all the way over from Scotland Brewdog Punk IPA is light golden in colour, with tropical fruits and light caramel aroma and 5.6% ABV.
At Flaherty’s Irish Bar Barcelona we like to keep up with the trends so we couldn’t resist creating our own craft beer, locally brewed in Barcelona by a local brewery. Flaherty’s Pale Ale is created with roasted crystal malt and some classic Magnum and Cascade hops to achieve the hoppy, light caramelised flavour. It is a classic pale ale, 5.2% ABV and has a delicious clear amber colour.
