03 Nov Movember in Barcelona at Flaherty’s
November is here and that means it’s time to grow your mo! Here at Flaherty’s our motto is always ‘party hard’, but we also believe you should look after yourself and your health just as hard. For the last five years with the help of our fabulous customers, we have donated hundreds of euros to the Movember Foundation in support of men’s health. We want to make 2018 our best year yet, so for the month of November we will donate 0,50€ from every mojito you buy to the Movember Foundation.
The Movember Foundation
The Movember Foundation began in Australia in 2003 with two chaps in a pub. Isn’t that the perfect
beginning to any story? The friends were discussing bringing the moustache back into fashion and the idea quickly grew to a campaign for raising funds for men’s health. That first Movember saw 30 friends each paying $10 AUD to grow a moustache to raise money, and a movement was born. Things moved fast and only a year later, the fledgling movement had raised $54,000 AUD and two unofficial international events were running in Spain and the UK. Fast forward to 2017, a now fully international movement saw over 300,000 registered participants raise $88m AUD, with over 70% of the funds raised going directly to 1200 men’s health projects. See what you can you do when you meet up with friends in a pub?
Changing the face of men’s health
“Our goals are big, but the impact of doing nothing is bigger. We need to act.” Originally a drunken discussion about men’s facial hair, the movement has a single mission: to stop men dying too young, and it focuses on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention.
And it’s not just November. The foundation supports global initiatives based on research, awareness and education about men’s health throughout the year. Men are taught from a young age to act tough, and research shows that men are reluctant to talk about their feelings or their health, and often don’t take any action when problems arise. Men continue to die at a younger age than women, prostate cancer is second most common to lung cancer, and 3 out of 4 suicides globally are men. If you are worried about your health, or the health of a man you care about, the Movember Foundation works to break down the stigma surrounding men’s health, educating men about their concerns, and identifying where they can turn for help.
What a drink, and like Ernest Hemingway, one of our all-time favourites. Made with white rum, sugar, lime and mint, history posits the mojito may have been invented by Sir Francis Drake, and was originally a health drink thought to help prevent scurvy. Synonymous with Cuba and made famous by the Bacardi family who started making rum in in 1862, the mojito is the perfect aperitif and so refreshing. The only problem is they are so easy to drink, and one is never enough!
There are different theories about the origin of the name too, but here at Flaherty’s we agree it comes from the Spanish mojadito, meaning a little wet. Did you know there is a whole museum dedicated to all things Bacardi down in Sitges? If you are here on holiday it is well worth the trip down some truly beautiful coastline. The history is cool, and we can recommend the tasting and mixology classes.
So this Movember, whether you are a Mo Bro or a Mo Sista, style your mo like a hipster or a porn-star, or even wear a fake; get down to Flaherty’s this month to dip your mo in our mos, and help raise money to stop men dying too young.
