Guide to Irish beers and beverages
Ireland is famous for many things—sports, literature, music, and cuisine—but perhaps what we are most renowned for is our great tradition in brewing the finest beers and spirits in the world. At Flaherty’s Irish Bar in Barcelona, we pride ourselves on providing our customers with a wide variety of beverages. For many years, we have been the go-to place for the Irish in the heart of the Catalan capital, where foreigners and Barcelonians alike come to relax in our unique atmosphere. Let’s take a tour through the best Irish drinks.
Typical Irish Beer
Stout
Stout is perhaps the most famous Irish beer. This beer has a dark color and a characteristic creamy white head, and is made with four simple ingredients: water, barley, hops, and yeast. Stout has a smooth texture and a sweet, malty flavor. Undoubtedly, the most famous stout producer in the world is Guinness. The Guinness brewery was founded in 1759 in Dublin, one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations. At Flaherty’s, we serve the best Guinness in Barcelona, and our staff is trained in the art of the two-part pour, so characteristic of this type of beer.
Ales
Irish ales are similar to stouts but have a lighter texture and a slightly more bitter taste. They are made with malted barley and beer yeast, and of all the varieties available, the most common in Ireland are red and brown. At Flaherty’s, we serve Murphy’s Red Ale, originating from County Cork, as well as Five Lamps Red Ale, a new and exquisite variety of ale from the capital. The texture of ales is similar to Guinness, making them perfect for those who are looking for a slightly milder drink than the typical black beer.
Typical Irish Snack to Accompany Your Beer
For those who want to enjoy the authentic taste of Ireland, at Flaherty’s we offer our customers the famous Tayto crisps, long considered Ireland’s national crisps. You can choose from a delicious range of flavors, including cheese and onion, smoked bacon, and of course, the crème de la crème, salt and vinegar.
Irish Whiskey 101
In addition to beer, Ireland is very famous for its whiskeys. At Flaherty’s, we have a wide selection of some of the best Irish whiskeys, as well as other internationally renowned brands.
- Jameson Original
- Tullamore Dew
- Paddy
- Black Bush
- Jameson Black Barrel, 12 YR
- Bushmills 10 YR

How to Make an Irish Coffee
For those who don’t know, you might wonder: what is an Irish coffee? In short, an Irish coffee is a hot cup of coffee with a splash of Irish whiskey and topped with whipped cream. This relatively simple drink is especially popular in winter and during the Christmas holidays.
- Prepare the whipped cream or choose one from the supermarket.
- Brew the coffee as you normally would.
- Pour the coffee into a heat-resistant glass.
- Add the whiskey and sugar and stir well until the sugar is completely dissolved.
- Slowly add the whipped cream on top and smooth it out for a flat finish. Sprinkle a bit of cinnamon or cocoa on top for extra flavor.
