Best Premier League Fixtures and Derbies

Locals in Barcelona are well-used to enjoying some of the best sporting derbies in football, with ‘el clasico’ drawing in massive worldwide audiences every year. However, they might not be as familiar with some of the mouth-watering derbies and rivalries that take place in the English premier league every year.

Manchester Derby

The Manchester derby has become a major fixture in world football largely due to the recent success of Manchester City. Under Pep Guardiola, the Blues have assembled a team that could go down in history as one of the greatest of all time. United’s recent fortunes, on the other hand, have been mixed to say the least, especially since the retirement of long time manager Alex Ferguson, but they are still a force to be reckoned with and this derby last season alone served up eleven goals in two encounters. The reversal of fortunes in the city has been dramatic, to say the least. Twenty years ago, Manchester United were top of the table with Man City having only been promoted back to top flight football the season before. Nowadays, it’s a very different story in the north west.

London Derbies

With London having a population of almost 9 million, it’s not surprising that the city boasts 7 teams currently playing top flight football: Arsenal, Brentford, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Tottenham Hopspurs and West Ham United. In recent times, Arsenal and Chelsea have had the most success, with both teams reaching the top 4 with consistency, so when any of the smaller London clubs come up against them it’s always a grudge match. However, apart from the Arsenal-Chelsea derby, Arsenal-Tottenham is a notable fixture, as well as Chelsea-West Ham.

North West Derby

Traditionally, one of the most bitter rivalries in English football has been the one between Liverpool and Manchester Utd. Neighbours in the north east, both clubs have enjoyed periods of dominance, with Liverpool reigning supreme in the 80s and United ruling the roost in the 90s and 00s. Nowadays, it’s the merseysiders who are getting the better of things, enjoying a stunning 7-0 victory over their old nemesis.

Merseyside Derby

Another scintillating fixture in the premier league calendar is the Merseyside derby. Unlike many other local derbies in England, the merseyside derby, also known as the ‘friendly derby’ is played in a more sporting atmosphere owing to the shared history of the clubs. As for the football, Liverpool have the bragging rights with 27 wins as opposed to 10 for Everton in the premiership era.
