How is New Year’s Eve Celebrated in Barcelona?

The 12 Grapes of New Year’s Eve

Like in much of Spain, Catalans enjoy ringing in the new year by eating 12 grapes in time with the chiming of the church bells throughout the city. Each grape represents a month of the year, and eating them is said to bring good luck. At Flaherty’s, we are proud to honour this tradition in our adopted home of Barcelona, and that’s why we have two special New Year’s Eve offers for our customers to avail of.

  • 1 glass of Cava with 1 packet of complimentary 12 grapes, €10
  • 1 bottle of Cava with 2 packets of complimentary 12 grapes, €20

Don’t miss out on this quintessential Spanish tradition. Come to Flaherty’s this New Year’s Eve!

Christmas Holidays in Spain: Important Dates and Traditions

Many of the key dates in the Spanish Christmas calendar are similar to those in other parts of the world, but there are some. First of all, for many Spaniards, Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day is the big family meal, and in Catalonia, St. Stephen’s Day on the 26th, much like in Ireland, is of equal importance. New Year’s Eve is perhaps the biggest celebration of the holiday season here, but for children, the most important day of all is the 6th, as this is the day that the Three Wise Men deliver presents to the children of Spain.
